HISTORY OF PUERTO RICO 

• Christopher Columbus arrived at Puerto Rico in 1493. Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony on its way to becoming an important military outpost.

• Puerto Rico remained an overseas province of Spain until the Spanish-American war, when U.S. forces invaded the island with a landing at Guánica. Under the Treaty of Paris of 1898, Spain ceded Puerto Rico (along with Cuba, the Philippines and Guam) to the U.S.

• Puerto Ricans received U.S. citizenship in 1917 and Puerto Rico officially became a U.S. Commonwealth in 1952.

 

GEOGRAPHY

• Puerto Rico is the easternmost of the Greater Antilles (18 15 N, 66 30 W), and the fourth largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba, Hispaniola (which comprises the Dominican Republic and Haiti), and Jamaica.

• The Island is located at the crossroads between North and South America, at just 3.5 hours airtime from New York, 60 minutes from Caracas, and at only 4 days sailing from Atlantic ports in the U.S. and ports in the Gulf of Mexico.

•With an area of 3,425 square miles (9,104 sq. km.), Puerto Rico is the third largest island in the United States and the 82nd largest island in the world.

• Spanish and English are official languages and the currency is the U.S. Dollar.

 

POPULATION 

• Based on the latest U. S. Census, the population of Puerto Rico is roughly three million seven hundred twenty six thousand (3,725,789) people.
